![]() At this stage 4 of the 8 planned races are playable and only 3 of the 5 tech trees are available. This information is based on my time with a pre-release press copy of the game, so please bear in mind some things may change in the official EA release. What will and won’t be available in Endless Space 2’s early access is something you’ll definitely want to be aware of before diving in. Well you’ll no longer need to wonder, because today, Endless Space 2 launches on early access. Until now, we could only imagine what this veteran 4X game studio could do if given a chance to apply this same level of polish and experience in a return to the space genre. While in the long run I had my issues with Endless Space, I was impressed by Amplitude’s dedication to the genre and even more impressed by their take on 4X fantasy, Endless Legend, a game which has obviously done well as this very month it will have its 4th major expansion release. In addition, Amplitude Studios was a true pioneer in both the early access concept as well as customer involvement. Their space strategy game, Endless Space, was the spark that reignited the 4X fire in many of us after we’d experienced a series of disastrous releases from other developers. Heck the Vodyani STILL confuse some players even after they've gotten the hang of things. When I think about those who helped pioneer the resurgence of 4X strategy games in recent years, I think first and foremost about Amplitude Studios. The other races tend to vastly change the rules of the game right from the start and can be confusing to those who haven't really gotten used to ES2's fundamentals-especially the Vodyani and the Riftborn. Horatio also possess no strange mechanics (other than splicing) and play fairly simply, barring the strategic choice of what to splice and when. The United Empire is also fairly bog standard, but the ability to buy out literally anything with influence takes some thinking around to really get mileage out of it. The Sophons are also strikingly straightforward, as they simply research things faster if they go their own way instead of copying everyone else's tech. Really bringing in the dust requires some economic thinking, but figuring out how to play is exceedingly simple. They have literally zero extra mechanics or buttons to press and they don't even have to figure out how to colonize they just buy a system. ![]() Perhaps the simplest race to LEARN, but not necessarily master, are the Lumeris. Which is the only reason Horatio didn't make my list of best factions for "first time" players.Īll the factions are great, but the Sophons, United Empire and Lumeris would be my top picks for beginners. If you don't know it's there and what it's for, because it's your first time playing, then you can't play Horatio the way they are meant to be played. Such as the population screen for gene splicing Horatio. They are also the most straight forward factions to play, requiring the least number of "additional" gameplay mechanics to be played competently. Plus each one specializes in the more familiar aspects of traditional 4X games with the Sophons specializing in Science, the Lumeris in Economy, and the United Empire in Production/Influence. With the one notable exception of the Lumeris buying their colonies rather than needing colony ships. ![]() Their play styles are the closest to traditional factions play styles in other games. The Vodyani was close to being in that list for being hardest to learn with, but they're just barely easy enough to figure out and play competently to not deserve that designation.īut if you have played many or even some 4X games like Civilization before, then I would say either the Sophons, United Empire, or the Lumeris would be the best factions to play for your first games. I think those two factions are probably the most punishing factions to learn to play when you're new to the game, due to the riftborn requiring you to know that you need to build their pops yourself. Except for maybe the Riftborn and the Hissho. ![]() If you've never played 4X games before, then sure, your learning curve with one faction should be the same as any other. I wouldn't consider any of those the best starters due to how unique their play styles are. And while I do have my favorite factions like the Vodyani, Riftborn and Vaulters. They're all just very unique, which I think is this game's greatest strength. There is no best faction in this game, just like there's no worst faction. ![]()
